Vulgar Planet VI
Shared by

If we consider this painting in terms of its title, we might read it as a view through a telescope of a planet’s surface, or perhaps even multiple planets in a solar system. Fong is interested in the concept of the microcosm and macrocosm, that the same patterns are reproduced in all levels of the cosmos. Knowing this, the painting could also be read as a view through a microscope onto a slide carrying blood. Also of interest to Fong are feminism, the human body, cosmology, astrology, biology, pathology, and her own experiences and responses to the world and cultures around her. This wide range of sources offers many possible meanings, resulting in ambiguity" (Exhibition label from: "Are you right not to like Modern art" by Nicola Jennings)
