Replicant 36

Shared by
Te Manawa

This image is a self portrait of the artist, noticeably tightly cropped as if a camera has zoomed in upon his face. While Kelcy Taratoa has often included an image of himself within his painted compositions, up until now he was generally not the central focus but instead a part of the story. He says of this “I have been stripping away content visible in earlier works. Recent works display a gravitation toward compositional frameworks reminiscent of cinematic and televised imagery. The works are close-up, dramatically cropped, facilitating a type of intimacy through proximity. What I am attempting to create between the viewer and the subject is a feeling of the viewer being suspended with the subject in a state of isolation." Artist statment in Conversations Identity. Exhibition helpd at Te Manawa in 2009.
