Medal, MBE awarded to Mrs Janet Bowie, 1919

Shared by
Toitū Otago Settlers Museum

Janet Bowie first arrived in Otago with her bolt-maker husband George, daughters Janet (6), Helen (4), Elizabeth (2), and son George (3 months) on the ship Wellington in 1876. After about twelve months residence in Dunedin the Bowies moved to the South Otago town of Milton. Janet became well-known for the service she freely gave to her neighbours. But most of all, she became known for having hand-knitted 736 pairs of socks for the ‘Boys at the Front’ during the Great War. This was claimed to be a New Zealand (and possibly a world) record for hand-knitting socks. For her efforts Janet Bowie was awarded the MBE in 1919.
