Mike and Helen Hammond trace the story from 1847 to 2010 of Howick's Catholic Parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Footsteps of Faith. It was formed to meet the spiritual needs of the Catholic Fencible soldier-settlers, mostly Irish, who were escaping from the Irish Potato Famine of 1846-1849. Many arrived in poor health but were determined to strive for a new and better life in a fresh land with plenty of opportunities. However, the first four priests in Howick were French. They were members of the Marist Order who came to New Zealand, some as early as 1840, to work with Bishop Pompallier as missionaries to the Maori in the north. Includes bibliographical references (p. 232) and index. Contents: Prologue: Maori missioner: Bishop Pompallier -- Birth of the Parish -- Parish school -- Growing parish -- Living parish -- Parish Pastoral Council -- History of Bucklands Beach Church -- History of Beachlands and the Pohutukawa Coast -- Pakuranga: from cowshed to splendid church -- Memories.
