Cheque issued by the Maungatautari Peeke (Maungatautari Bank)
Shared by
Cambridge Museum
This haki or cheque was issued by the Maungatautari Peeke. Dated 17 March 1905, it instructs Wi Pewhairangi to pay Henare Matanuku the sum of £500. The Maungatautari Peeke was set up by Kīngitanga (King Movement) to handle the money received for land sales. While the Maungatautari Peeke didn’t issue its own currency, its haki were a useful way to transfer funds between customers. The haki is signed Taawhiao although Kingi Taawhiao died in 1894. Māori kings did take on the names of kings who had been before them. It was not unusual for King Mahuta or his nominee to sign a cheque with this name.
