Adze

Shared by
Woodville Pioneer Museum Society Inc

Around 1950 six adzes were ploughed up near the Old Gorge Road near the Manawatu River on the Woodville side. Some local children were given one each. The adzes were presumed to have been stored on the site of a potato/kumera plot, which was subsequently covered by flood waters. The stone is Argolite domestic rock from D’Urville Island, which was traded all over New Zealand. Brian Hutchinson bought this adze from one of the children for 2s 6d. Donated to the Woodville Pioneer Museum by Roy Cotter c2012.
