Geology Specimen, Chert Slice
Shared by
Wyndham and District Historical Museum
Chert is a sedimentary rock composed of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz, the mineral form of silicon dioxide. It occurs as nodules, concretionary masses, and as layered deposits. Chert breaks with a conchoidal fracture, often producing very sharp edges. The term chert encompasses jasper, agate and flint, as well as other, less well known semi-precious stones.
