Ltd paddle-steamer Wakatere, 441 tons gross, built in Dumbartonshire in 1896, was brought out to New Zealand at the end of that year to begin 30 years of service on the Hauraki Gulf run from Auckland to Thames. The Wakatere was one of the most popular steamers in the gulf service, and a great favourite for excursions and picnics on public holidays. Her paddles churned her along at from 15 to 16 knots. In 1926 she was laid up and later sold for scrap. .4: Has photos from Horse of year competition at Levin.
