4 Sports trophies of Headmaster G R Saunders (1878-81)

The trophies were won by G R Saunders when he was at Cambridge University in 1871. When headmaster he introduced sports and gave his 'racing Colours' of black and blue to the School. He gave the School its first trophy, a Pewter tankard for steeplechase in 1880 (still contested today) He also gave one of his Cambridge swimming cups. in 1881 he returned to Cambridge University and completed his medical degree returning to Whanganui serving the community as a GP. He gave a further two swimming cups These 1871 cups were donated to our Museum in 2024 by his great grandson Dr Peter Saunders.
