Bag, church offering

Shared by
Glentunnel Museum, Canterbury, New Zealand

Collection bags or plates were used in churches for the parishioners to place a monetary donation. This burgundy coloured velvet collection bag with wooden handles was rescued from St Luke's Anglican Church, Glentunnel after the church was partially destroyed by fire in 1975. St Luke's Church was situated on the corner of Homebush Road and Victoria Street in the village. The burnt out shell was transported to John and Diedre Grenell's property on the Whitecliffs Road where it was used as the main stage for the music festivals held during the 1980s.
