Noah's Ark
Shared by
Katherine Mansfield House & Garden
Wooden Noah's Ark with paper frieze and windows. Hand carved animals and figures. The object includes three human figures, two mice, two chickens, one elephant, one horse, six birds, one pig, four sheep, one dog and a long building with three windows on each side and a apex roof. During the Victorian era, children began to be seen as children instead of additional workers in a household. Alongside the industrial revolution, this change led to the mass production of toys; although they were still not as widely available as they are today. The toys available tend to be very simple. Wooden animals were very popular toys, particularly as part of a Noah's Ark set. A Noah's Ark set was toys based on the biblical flood. These toys would often be played with on a Sunday; the animals and other figures in these sets were often homemade and/or carved from wood or painted.
