Tūātapere & Districts - Events History, Backwaters Festivals of 1980s-1990s: This photo is of the Tūātapere Backwaters Festival event. We know this even was started in 1987. Aerial image shows the crowds gathered at the Tūātapere Domain. Photo was kindly donated to us by Ron McDowell, but we are unsure what year this was. Does anyone know the date please? EVENT HISTORY: Did you know that Tūātapere was once the scene of a large music festival?! The local Lions & Lionesses clubs were instrumental in fundraising for the community, with one of their largest ever undertakings, being the once far-famed "Backwaters" Festival, started in 1987 as per a historical article on this, which can be viewed in these collections under CWA.012.091.005 The festival continued into the 1990's as shown here, but we are unsure exactly when it finished up, so if anyone has the year, please let us know! Hopefully this entry will be added to as more information comes to hand. If you or anyone you know has any more information or photos to share or accounts of the history of the Tūātapere Backwaters Festivals, please do share this with us in the comments section. You can do this by making a comment in the space provided under the image page. Or you can make contact with us as per the archive front page.
