Asian mental health in Aotearoa project

Shared by
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Many individuals from Asian diasporas in Aotearoa New Zealand have consistently called for a greater focus on mental health issues. This project responded to this call by highlighting various discussions, understandings, and perspectives on the various factors affecting the mental health of Asian communities in Aotearoa.Led by mental health researcher and advocate Mehwish Mughal and supported by Te Papa Curator Asian New Zealand Histories Grace Gassin, the project led to the creation a submission-based digital zine, Unravelling Threads, which featured personal and nuanced discussions of mental health by Asian contributors; the Reimagining Asian Mental Health Hui held in Auckland in 2023 and a six-part video series.
