The original Borland started it's life in the late sixties, as the Pig's Creek Linesmen's Camp for workers building the transmission line for the Manapōuri underground power station. The facility was later donated to the non-profit trust for youth outdoor education, which further developed the facility. Borland Lodge has undergone extensive redevelopment, and several new accommodation and educational facilities were built, including a multi-purpose Ecology Centre.
