Born in New Zealand in 1922, expatriate artist Douglas MacDiarmid has been vitally involved with key movements in twentieth-century art. He was educated at the Canterbury University in Christchurch, where he was associated with the avant-garde Christchurch 'Group.' He has since relocated, based in Paris since the 1940's. Jacqueline Fahey was bore in 1930 in Timaru. She was educated at the Canterbury College School of Art in Christchurch. Fahey was one of the first New Zealand women artists to paint from the feminist perspective, choosing her subjects, materials, and methods to express her feminist concerns.
