Fiordland or Te Rua-o-Te-Moko Heritage - Clifden Rural Women cruising on MY 'Faith': On 25 November 2020, the local chapter of Clifden Rural Women celebrated their 90 years anniversary with a fun trip out, a cruise on Motor Yacht (MY) 'Faith', which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Later this year, November 2025, the Clifden Rural Women celebrate their 95th year while the national Rural Women movement are celebrating their Centennial year. They started their journey as WDFU or Women's Division of Farmers Union, and for many years they were the well known WDFF or Women's Division of Federated Farmers. It is fabulous to see the Clifden Rural Women group here enjoying themselves for a day, as they do a lot for our community and district, they are involved in education, environment and much more, and in days past the group used to teach home craft/housekeeping skills to rural women, as well as looking after struggling families and local women during wartime. It is in this role we nominate the group for International Women's Day 2025. As part of our role in helping them celebrate this history, our local Heritage Hub will be putting on a display of the districts past and current groups, so watch this space for more details and also see how you can be involved too. On this trip shown above, great memories were made. One of the Clifden Rural Women members says how fabulous the hidden island was, and how amazing it was to travel there on MY Faith in all her historic glory. The photos displayed here are older, so show George in uniform. He retired a few years ago now. Fiordland Historic Cruises new owner Adam and partner Megan now operate MY Faith and they can be found on: www.fiordlandhistoriccruises.co.nz FAITH'S STORY: According to the new owners, MY Faith is a 1935 Scottish built Motor Yacht (M.Y.) and made her way to New Zealand in 1980-1981. Originally landing in Whangarei, Faith has had various owners in New Zealand before finding her way to Te Anau in 2014. Their website (the address is in Place notes), expands on 'Faith's' background: "Our vessel 'Faith' has such a unique story beginning her life as a Private Motor Yacht for Cuthbert Willan who commissioned her build in 1935 in Scotland. Designed by Alfred Mylne and built by Dickie in Son’s, Faith unique construction makes her one of a kind. Faith’s restoration is ongoing and every effort is made by the Fiordland Historic Cruises team to ensure she will be around for at least another 90 years! She’s had many owners over the years, many of whom consider themselves custodian’s rather than owners. How she came to be on Lake Te Anau is a story of true adventure, you’ll just have to join us to find out more…." We suggest you do just that! Fiordland Historic Cruises are also committed to ongoing sustainability and protecting the environment, so you can be assured that when you travel with them, you too are doing your part to preserve this beautiful treasure. You can see more about MY Faith's recent adventures and a history book on her to help with her upkeep, in another entry in these community archives. ARCHIVIST'S NOTE: If you have any accounts of trips or photographs of journeys with 'Faith' over the years, however recent, please make a comment in the space provided on this page, or make contact via the archive email on the front page, if you would like these shared in our Community Archives online Collections. Sharing our history of the communities we belong to, enriches all of us, and ensures that our legacy of heritage continues into the future.
