Steeped in rustic appeal and worn-in charm, baches sprouted up around Aotearoa's coastline from 1950s for those in need of a seaside retreat.
These slap-up buildings known for their modest size and decorated with hand-me-down furniture can be found from Bluff to Kaitaia. The bach is a testament to the unfussy nature of NZ holidaymakers, who often cobbled them together using recycled materials or grafted them onto caravans. In this set, we look at some of the photographs and models of baches held across our collecting organisations.
